Eliminate Vinyl Letters and Decals from Vehicles

Question: How do I remove vinyl lettering that has been on my vehicle for a couple of years?

Answer: There are a couple of kinds of vinyl used on vehicles. The first is a plotter cut vinyl that normally has an acrylic adhesive bonding the vinyl to the vehicle.

There are fluctuating grades of adhesives used on this kind of vinyl, and most often it is referred to as a "perpetual adhesive," but there is a variety in the quality of glue used, and how well it releases from your vehicle when you're ready to eliminate this kind of vinyl. Cheaper calendared vinyl use inexpensive adhesives, and they come off with better difficulty than the higher grade cast vinyl, but different businesses use different qualities of vinyl even within the cast or calendared vinyl classes. Some of the simplest vinyl to remove, we've found, are manufactured by 3M (we make nothing on this endorsement).

We won't say which company's vinyls are the toughest to remove, but they are almost always calendared, with one exception, which I'll address at the end of this Q&A section. You can also navigate to this website to get tips on removing vinyl graphics from your vehicle.

The other kind of vinyl that is most commonly used on vehicles is printed vinyl decals or stickers. Usually, the cheaper calendared vinyl are used for these decals, so the adhesives are the kind that is more difficult to remove as well.

Some businesses have gone to static cling vinyl because numerous car owners aren't fond of having to eliminate adhesive decals, but inappropriately, they can't adhere to the exterior of your vehicle which is a negative when you have tinted windows.

Static clings also don't stick to metal and don't bond resolutely enough to the glass to keep from blowing off a vehicle once it's in motion. The best technique to remove any adhesive vinyl decal is through the use of heat applied to the decals.
